A book cover idea for David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks.
The book features a number of intertwining stories with a variety of characters of different ages, lifestyles, locales and even eras. I used the cogs to represent this interconnection, how they all affect each other. I also used them as the cogs in a clock, to represent time. The book spans over sixty years. In addition to these stories is an overarching story about the war between the soul-decanters and vigilantes, which involves themes of magic and divination. This informed my overall design and use of line. It is reminiscent of psychic imagery and charts. They involve connecting lines, circles and circular designs. Circles in general are also a symbol of the world, and how everything is connected and cyclical. I also used this circular theme to include six heads to represent each of the six main stories / characters throughout the book. They are placed within the cogs to show their connection with the cog symbolism. I chose a black background to create a more aesthetically interesting and piece, as well as to suggest the idea of stars, space, and constellations, all of which tie into the idea of connection, divination, variety and cycles. The font chosen for the title and author's name are delicate to match the delicate line work. Coloured pencils on black card stock were used. |
